The 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicks off in Las Vegas, from January 9th to 12th this year. The theme for CES 2024 is "All together, All ON.", expected to draw more than 130,000 attendees and over 4,000 exhibitors, including over 1,200 startups in the Eureka Park.
Leading by one of the important innovation bases of Taipei City that located in the Taipei Arena, Taiwan Tech Arena (TTA), with experiences of supporting more than 700 new startup teams since June 2017, this year, it brings forth 96 technology startups, covering industries such as smart healthcare, smart living, AI and cybersecurity, and green energy, showcasing the technologies to the world in TTA Pavilion. The pavilion is jointly organized by the National Science and Technology Council, Ministry of Digital Affairs, National Development Council, and Ministry of Economic Affairs. Taipei City Government is invited to attend the event and showcase scientific research and innovation capabilities as well.
During the visit, Shih-Ming You, Deputy Secretary-General, Taipei City Government, introduces the investment environment and innovation and startup policies of Taipei City, inviting outstanding startup teams to explore potential collaboration opportunities in Taipei and land in the city.
1- Funding Supports
The city has embarked on an ambitious plan to bolster financial backing for startups through an enhanced subsidy program, building on the success of grants provided to SMEs over the past decade. Launched in September 2023, the "Innovation Acceleration" and "Theme-based R&D" categories under the expanded subsidy plans are set to stimulate industrial innovation and research and development.
Regulatory frameworks will be revisited to incentivize investments, attract global talents, and cultivate an environment to high-quality employment opportunities. The city also plans to attract corporate headquarters, fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors. Qualified startups recommended by VC or CVC can apply for a three-stage subsidy covering Research and Development, innovation acceleration, and branding.
2- Talent Attraction
To facilitate international collaboration, startup resources will be shared with sister cities and those with signed MOU, allowing international teams or talent to access business resources, as well as startup services from StartUp@Taipei and ITO.
In 2023, the city cooperated with National Taipei University of Technology and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, bring startup services to campuses. In 2024, there will be more startup-related programs and startup-internships for the youth, aiming to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Additionally, the city has announced its plans to establish flagship innovation center, aiming to offer extensive support for international startups seeking to establish their presence in the city. This initiative is envisioned as a one-stop solution, providing tailored services to streamline the process of launching and operating businesses.
3- Market Expansion
To propel startups and enterprises into new markets, the city introduces a procurement platform that facilitates collaboration between startups, SMEs, and government agencies, enterprises, aiming to catalyze business opportunities and encourage active participation in the procurement market.
In a bid to amplify global exposure, Taipei City organizes and leads startups in international exhibitions. Furthermore, the "One-Pass" initiative, scheduled to launch this year, will support startups in utilizing renowned co-working spaces abroad, fostering engagement with local ecosystems and creating opportunities for overseas business development. The city is poised to become a global beacon for startup innovation and collaboration with these comprehensive initiatives in place.
As Crowdfund Capital Advisors Study ranked Las Vegas as the best start-up city in the world, during the visit, Deputy Secretary-General You not only visits the Economic and Urban Development Department of Las Vegas and its International Innovation Center, exchanging issues on SMEs retail sector, international innovation and taxation, but also visited the Clark County Assessor's Office, discussing issues of cost method valuation and taxation of the gaming industry.
With one-stop services for startups, entrepreneurship and investors, Taipei City is thriving. To keep strengthening the industrial clusters, the city designs a R&D industry corridor. Among the clusters, Beitou-Shilin Technology Park is the center of knowledge economy for biotechnology, media, information, communications and other related industries long-term development, and welcoming the world to come and invest.
