Practices of Biogas Electricity in Taiwan

  The recent global energy trend reveals the new energy policy which introduces more green fuel instead of the fossil fuel. Since the end of twentieth century, most of countries put green energy into practice by offering incentives, such as government grant, relevant legislation, and providing counsel service for those, e.g. local government, environment protection department and electricity producer, to devise biogas electricity facilities. Today, the biogas electricity capacity in UK is 852,000 kilowatts and 657,000 kilowatts in Germany. Compared with above two countries, although the population of Great Britain is only 60% of that in Germany and the number of incinerators in UK is far less than that in Germany, UK government increases the biogas electricity by increasing sanitary landfills and the regulations to restrict ten private electricity producers to use non-fossil fuel partly.

  Nowadays, the following is a list of sanitary landfills in Taiwan: Shanzhuku and FuDeKeng in Taipei City, San-xia in New Taipei City, Hsichingpu in Kaohsiung City, and Wenshan in Taichung City. These landfills are all equipped with biogas electricity generation facilities to reduce the biogas pollution. Through the collection process of sanitary landfill bio-gas, we can decrease the consumption of fossil fuel, ameliorate the energy structure, save fuel cost, promote the economic development, lower the greenhouse effect and preserve the environment and ecology.
